Features of Natural Interest
Only approximately 8% of South Georgia is vegetated due to its mountainous, rugged and glaciated landscape. Vegetated areas are primarily found on the coastal lowlands of the milder northern side of South Georgia as they are free of snow during the summer. Low herbaceous plants dominate habitat types such as grassland communities, mire, bog and fellfield. There is distinct altitudinal zonation as only 3% of South Georgia is fully covered in vegetation and 5% is partially or sparsely vegetated.
